Life in Hawaii

Friday, August 2, 2013

Hey, Hey. Here's the second installment of my travel diaries for our Hawaii + Seattle trip we took this summer! I'm so sad that it's already over--time flew by wayyyy too fast! But I guess that's what happens when you're having fun, right? To see my post about the first half of our trip, click HERE.

I think the thing I miss the most about Hawaii, besides my family and friends, is the calming atmosphere of the beach and ocean. Growing up in Hilo, I always took advantage of the fact that I lived on an island. Going to the beach was something I did if there was nothing else to do that day.
This past year, I went through some hard times when I let stress, depression, and anxiety get the best of me. It wasn't until I visited home this summer that I really understood the meaning of "ocean therapy." Something about sticking my feet in the warm sand and inhaling the salty ocean air, really put my mind and body at ease. Being in that state of mind reminded me to enjoy the little things in life and to not let little worries consume you.

Okay, enough of all that heavy stuff and let's get on to the pictures!

We went on a mission to the southernmost point of the USA! Along the way we made a pitstop of Punalu'u Beach because Connor wanted to see a black sand beach and turtles!
There was only one Crush chilling on land that day but we were still amused.
WELCOME TO THE SOUTHERNMOST POINT OF THE USA!!!
People were actually jumping off those cliffs! We decided we are going to do it next time. (:
We found out that there is a Green Sand Beach at South Point so we decided to go to it. Little did we know that it is actually a 3-mile hike from where you park your car to the actual beach (you can't drive to it unless you have a 4-wheel-drive vehicle because of the crazy terrain). There were carpools available but they were charging $10 per person, PER WAY, so we dismissed that thought. Connor and I debated making the hike because we were wearing slippers (or flip flops/sandals, whatever you wanna call them), but we dropped the YOLO bomb and decided to go for it!
The hike itself wasn't that bad because we were along the coast the whole time so we got to enjoy the ocean view. It did however, take us 45 minutes to get there...
But it was SO worth it! That little cove on the left of the picture is where the beach was. We had to climb down those ledges on the far left to get down there, but it was much easier than it looks.
Enjoying our victory.
To celebrate (after we made the 3-mile trek BACK), we ate at Hana Hou Restaurant, the southernmost restaurant in the USA. We felt so cool.
Food, food, food. I couldn't leave home without having that Acai Bowl from Sweet Cane Cafe ONE more time!
A new place called Snow Factory just opened up in Hilo this summer! They sell "Snow Ice" which is not shave ice, frozen yogurt, or ice cream. The company best describes it as "frozen cotton candy." Well, whatever it is, it was DELICIOUS! We got li hing mui flavor with a sno cap and mochi on top! My mouth is seriously watering just writing about this right now.
I adore my mom. She finally taught me how to make her famous cinnamon rolls!
This pup can make any day of mine brighter. Even when he's sleeping.
Made some time to see my friends one last time before I left. I love these ladies.
 My parents are my everything.
This picture is supposed to be sad because it was taken right before we left Hilo, but I can't help but laugh when I look at my mom's attempt at a "pout." She is seriously the cutest lady ever.
BACK IN SEATTLE!
As you all know, I LOVE boating whenever we are in Seattle. So of course, during our one day layover before our flight to Salt Lake City, we squeezed in a lake day!
 Brothers being brothers.
Tubing with my "little" brother. Connor's dad almost ripped our arms off. (just kidding. no, but really.)
OH! I ALMOST FORGOT!
(Just kidding, I didn't forget. I just did that for dramatic effect)
Connor and I celebrated our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY while we were in Hawaii!!!
I wanted to do a separate post just focusing on our anniversary and weekend getaway, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Stay Classy.
